dex|tran «DEHKS tran», noun.
Chemistry. a white, slimy carbohydrate, produced in sugar solutions such as molasses or fermenting sugar beets, by the action of certain bacteria. It is used as a substitute for blood plasma in cases of shock. »

Unlike blood plasma, scientists note, dextran can be stockpiled without refrigeration and it does not transmit certain types of virus (Wall Street Journal).
